Many leaders view the AI transformation as an opportunity for the CTOs and CIOs of the world to drive strategy and implementation. While technologists certainly have a big part to play in determining how to get the most impact out of AI, this is really a time for non-technologists like Chief Human Resource Officers to make their mark in how AI is leveraged within their organizations.
Why? Knownwell CEO David DeWolf believes that CHROs are uniquely qualified to become what he calls the Chief HumAIn Officers. In other words, they should be the leaders who advocate for the people in an organization and help shape the future where talent and technology must co-exist.
“The CHRO has to get out of the tactical mode of just focusing on recruiting and compensation and the tactical limits and begin to live in the future and drive more strategy,” David says.
Among the things they should be strategizing around, he says, are: “Here’s how our firm sees the advent of AI impacting our employee base. And here’s why that’s a good thing. Here’s how it’s going to actually contribute to the employee experience versus sabotage the employee experience.”

Episode Highlights
- Courtney and Pete talk about 2 articles that crystalize where we are with AI, but much more importantly, where we’re going: Paul Krugman’s op-ed in the NYT, Will AI Transform the Economy and, If So, How and Robert McMillen’s WSJ article, The New Jobs for Humans in the AI Era
- David, Mohan, and Courtney discuss the ways in which the AI transformation is business as usual for CHROs, i.e. workforce planning, AND the ways in which it requires them to rewire their brains and think differently
- Pete Buer talks with Compensation Tool founder and HR veteran Justin Hampton about how AI is changing the game (or will be soon) in HR. Just how green is the greenfield for HR leaders? Extremely, it would seem. Justin cites a recent Garter survey that found only 5% of HR leaders have implemented Generative AI.
- Courtney references a blog post David wrote where he dives deeper into this topic, The Rise of the CHRO as the Chief HumAIn Officer
- The same survey found that 1/3 of HR leaders expect to lead their organization’s enterprise-wide AI ethics approach. Hello Chief HumAIn Officers!
