Execution, Operations & Beyond: The Different Altitudes of AI in Business

Episode 8 of AI Knowhow centers around the different altitudes of AI in business and where we see AI playing a part:

  • Ideology – Reducing the intensity of logical deduction and allowing people to focus on what is truly human.
  • Strategy – Understanding markets and redesigning the value chain to maximize profits.
  • Operations – Optimizing the manner in which discrete tasks and works streams are integrated to drive results.
  • Execution – Automating core knowledge work to drive individual performance excellence.
  • Manual Labor – Leveraging robots to autonomously perform physical work.

Currently, much of what’s happening is taking place at the altitudes of Manual Labor and Execution. Think robots replacing humans in Amazon warehouses on the Manual Labor altitude and software development or content generation at the Execution altitude.

Where we believe there are opportunities for vast improvements in the near future for companies is to use AI to excel at one business layer up — the Operations level.

What will this look like? Organizations will know they’ve gotten there when they’ve optimized the manner in which discrete tasks and work streams are integrated to drive results.

The next levels encompass Strategy and Ideology. Once that Operations layer is running smoothly, that should free leaders up to spend more time reflecting on and perfecting Strategy and Ideology, two altitudes where we see AI as always needing human input for the foreseeable future.
